How Divorce Coaches Can Support Better Mediation Outcomes

A short information session for mediators and other professionals in the family law space. We'll discuss what divorce coaching actually is, and why a coached client makes mediation easier.

Those working with clients in the family law space usually want the same outcome for our clients to help them settle efficiently and, ideally, stay out of Court. To minimise legal fees. We want the best outcome for children.

Believe it or not, clients often don't even know mediation is an option for them. When clients separate they are often confused and struggle to make decisions. There can be an overwhelming sense of uncertainty. They are often experiencing grief.

Unfortunately, when a client can't self-regulate in joint mediation sessions, or comes in so dysregulated it means that productive conversations are not always possible. I know how hard it is to mediate with a party who can't communicate constructively or make decisions. Client's who come into a mediation setting who have not actually (truely!) thought about what they want to achieve and what their ex partner may be wanting to achieve. I also know what a coached client looks like. After 24 years in family law — I've now seen 'both sides of the fence'!

In this short 20 minute session I'll discuss what divorce coaching is and importantly what it isn't. A well-regulated, coached client tends to communicate more constructively, prepare better for mediation, and stay more focused. Clients who have a better education about communication and conflict styles. 

I'll also talk about how referring clients to divorce coaching can add value to you and your practice, particularly a divorce coach who knows how to 'stay in her lane'. I am not a therapist or a lawyer.
